BEE Needle: From a Kwadron Alternative to Rediscovering an Old Needle Design

A customer recently came to us with a relatively straightforward request:
He was looking for a tattoo cartridge needle with performance and stability close to Kwadron, but at a more attractive price.
That was the original purpose of our conversation.
But what started as a search for a suitable tattoo cartridge eventually turned into something much more interesting — the rediscovery of an unusual needle configuration we had developed years ago.
And by the end of the conversation, that old configuration had a new name:
BEE Needle

The Original Request: Kwadron-Like Performance at a More Attractive Price
The customer's first requirement had nothing to do with developing a new needle configuration.
He was looking for an alternative to the premium tattoo cartridges he was already familiar with.
His requirements were clear:
stable needle movement, reliable performance, professional quality and a more competitive price.
Based on what he described, we immediately thought of one of our mature products:
CM03
CM03 is one of our long-established professional tattoo cartridge needle platforms.
Its mechanically supported needle structure provides stable needle movement and controlled performance. From a structural and positioning perspective, it was a strong match for what the customer was looking for.
We provided CM03 for evaluation.
The customer was satisfied with the result.
So the original purpose of the conversation had essentially been solved.
But then he mentioned another problem he had been trying to solve.
And that became the more interesting part of the story.

The Second Request Was Very Different
After discussing the cartridge itself, the customer described another type of needle he had been looking for.
This time, he was not asking for a specific existing needle configuration.
Instead, he described the performance he wanted.
He wanted a Magnum-style needle that could:
- provide a working feeling closer to an RL when creating lines
- still work like a Magnum when moved sideways for shading
- create smooth shading and transitions
- provide greater ink capacity than a conventional concentrated liner configuration
In simple terms, he wanted:
RL-like line control + Magnum-style shading + more ink capacity.
It was an interesting requirement.
But we did not immediately have an answer.
We Tried Needle After Needle
We began going through different needle configurations.
Some could produce good lines, but did not provide the shading behavior the customer wanted.
Some worked well for shading, but the contact felt too broad for the RL-like control he was looking for.
Others came close, but still did not provide the right balance.
We tested one needle after another.
At one point, we were almost ready to stop looking.
Then we suddenly remembered something.
A needle configuration we had developed many years ago.
We Used to Call It the “High-Low Needle”
Years ago, we had developed an unusual two-row needle configuration for a customer project.
The basic structure looked similar to a two-row Magnum, but there was one important difference:
the two rows did not end at the same height.
The lower row extended approximately 0.5 mm farther than the upper row.
At the time, we simply called it:
High-Low Needle.
There was no sophisticated marketing name behind it.
One row was higher.
One row was lower.
So “High-Low Needle” was the easiest way for our team to describe the structure.
We knew how to manufacture it.
We knew how to control the geometry.
But at that time, we had never explored this particular application in depth.
Years later, standing with a customer looking for something between an RL and a Magnum, we suddenly thought:
Why not try the High-Low Needle?

The Result Was Exactly What He Had Been Looking For
We gave the High-Low Needle to the customer for testing.
This time, the result was different.
It provided the combination he had been trying to describe.
When used for concentrated work, the longer row gave him a working feeling closer to an RL-style liner.
When he changed the working angle and moved the needle sideways, the two-row structure could be used for shading and soft transitions like a Magnum.
And because it remained a two-row configuration, it could also provide the greater ink capacity he wanted.
The customer tested it.
And it worked.
RL-like control for lining.
Sideways movement for shading.
More ink capacity.
After trying multiple configurations, an old needle design had unexpectedly become the solution.

Then We Gave It a Name: BEE Needle
After the test, the customer was very satisfied with the result.
Then he asked:
“What is this needle called?”
We told him that we had never given it a formal product name.
For years, internally, we had simply called it the High-Low Needle.
During the conversation, we discovered something interesting.
The word BEE had a connection with his brand.
And coincidentally, BEE also had a connection with one of our earliest brands.
So we decided together:
Let's call it BEE Needle.
And that is how the name was born.
The needle itself was not developed that day.
The structure had existed in our manufacturing history for years.
What changed was that we finally discovered another application where its unusual geometry made sense.
An old design had found a new purpose.
And the High-Low Needle became the BEE Needle.

Sometimes the Solution Already Exists
This experience reminded us of something important about custom tattoo needle development.
Innovation does not always mean starting from zero.
A manufacturer with years of product development experience accumulates:
- different needle configurations
- cartridge structures
- molds
- prototypes
- engineering solutions
- manufacturing experience
- ideas developed from previous projects
Some solutions are used immediately.
Others may remain in the background for years.
Then one day, a customer describes a problem and you suddenly realize:
We have seen something like this before.
That is exactly what happened with BEE Needle.
The customer's requirement gave an old configuration a new application.
The Conversation Did Not End With Tattoo Needles
Interestingly, we were not the only ones sharing knowledge that day.
After we helped explore his tattoo cartridge and needle requirements, the customer also showed us something from his own professional experience:
how he evaluates the quality of tattoo stencil transfer protection film.
It was a small detail, but extremely useful to us.
As manufacturers, we understand materials, structures, tolerances and production processes.
Professional tattoo artists understand what happens when those products are actually used every day.
That exchange reminded us why direct communication with professional users is so valuable.
Sometimes we solve a problem for the customer.
Sometimes the customer teaches us something.
The best conversations do both.
From Standard Products to Custom Tattoo Needle Development
This single conversation actually represented two different ways we work with customers.
The first requirement was solved with an existing mature product — CM03.
The second requirement was solved by rediscovering a special needle configuration from our previous development experience.
And sometimes, neither approach is enough and a completely new product needs to be developed.
That is why our OEM and ODM process does not always begin with:
“Send us your drawing.”
Sometimes a better question is:
“Tell us what you want the product to do.”
