Custom tattoo cartridge needles, components and packaging for OEM MOQ and cost guide

What Determines the MOQ and Cost of Custom Tattoo Cartridge Needles?

For tattoo brands, distributors and professional artists developing custom tattoo cartridge needles, two questions usually come first:

  • What is the minimum order quantity?
  • How much does customization cost?

There is no single MOQ or fixed development fee for every project.

A tattoo needle cartridge contains multiple parts, including the soldered needle configuration, tip, center housing, plunger, cap, silicone spring component, membrane system and packaging. Each component uses a different manufacturing process and therefore has different MOQ, tooling and development requirements.

At CREDITECH MED, custom tattoo cartridge needle projects generally fall into five categories:

  1. Custom packaging
  2. Custom soldered needle configurations
  3. Custom plastic and silicone components
  4. Internal cartridge structure modifications
  5. Independent injection mold development

The table below provides a quick overview.

Customization Type Typical MOQ Typical Cost or Requirement
Custom packaging No additional product MOQ Usually USD 250–500 for custom packaging materials
Standard taper adjustment No additional MOQ in most cases Uses regularly stocked needle materials
Special needle material or parameter 50 boxes per configuration Evaluated according to material and specification
Custom soldered needle configuration 250 boxes per configuration Welding fixture or tooling fee may apply
Custom center housing From approximately 500 boxes Depends on color, structure and mold requirements
Custom front tip Usually 2,500 boxes Depends on the number of tip molds required
Custom plunger with housing Combined with housing MOQ Evaluated as part of the housing project
Custom plunger only 2,500 boxes Assembly and compatibility testing may be required
Existing stocked cap No additional MOQ Applies when using a standard stocked component
Custom silicone spring component 50,000 pieces Material, color and hardness requirements affect cost
New injection mold Project-specific Approximately USD 1,000–50,000

These figures are general reference points. Final MOQ and cost depend on the exact specifications, number of configurations, tooling requirements and expected order volume.

1. Custom Tattoo Cartridge Needle Packaging

Custom packaging is the simplest and most economical way to launch a private-label tattoo cartridge needle product.

Packaging customization may include:

  • Brand name and logo
  • Packaging colors
  • Product labels
  • Needle configuration information
  • Retail box design
  • Blister or pouch presentation
  • Instructions and regulatory information
  • Barcodes and distributor-specific labels

MOQ for Custom Packaging

There is no additional product MOQ specifically for custom packaging. However, the customer is responsible for the cost of producing the customized packaging materials.

The product order must still meet our standard wholesale requirements, but customers do not need to order thousands of boxes simply because they want to use their own branded packaging.

Custom Packaging Cost

Custom packaging generally costs between USD 250 and USD 500, depending on:

  • Packaging structure
  • Material requirements
  • Printing process
  • Number of printed colors
  • Design complexity
  • Quantity of packaging materials
  • Whether new printing plates or cutting dies are required

Depending on the order quantity, part of the packaging customization cost may be reduced. For qualifying larger orders, the cost may be fully waived.

For a new tattoo needle brand testing the market with a controlled initial investment, custom packaging is usually the most practical starting point.

2. Custom Soldered Needle Configurations

Customizing the soldered needle configuration is different from customizing the plastic cartridge housing.

Experienced tattoo artists often develop original needle concepts based on their techniques, preferred working feel or specific application requirements. These projects may involve changes to the needle diameter, taper, surface finish, soldering distance, tightness or arrangement of the needle group.

Soldered needle customization can be divided into two levels: standard parameter adjustments and new needle configuration development.

Standard Needle Parameter Adjustments

Relatively straightforward adjustments may include:

  • Needle diameter
  • Short taper
  • Medium taper
  • Long taper
  • Extra-long taper
  • Textured needles
  • Semi-textured needles
  • Different needle surface treatments

Most commonly used needle diameters and tapers are regularly stocked materials at CREDITECH MED. Therefore, changing to a standard taper does not normally require an additional MOQ.

If a project requires a non-standard needle diameter, special taper, special surface treatment or needle material that is not regularly stocked, raw materials must be prepared separately.

In these cases, the typical MOQ is 50 boxes per configuration.

Soldering Distance and Needle Group Tightness

Soldering distance refers to the distance between the needle tips and the soldered section of the needle group.

This distance influences how tightly the needles are held together and how much movement is available at the front of the needle group. It can affect line control, ink storage, ink delivery, color packing and the overall working feel.

Customers may provide a specific soldering-distance requirement or describe the performance they want, such as:

  • A tighter needle group
  • A looser needle group
  • More flexibility at the needle tips
  • More concentrated performance for lining
  • Greater spread for shading
  • A specific balance between line control and ink flow

Our engineers evaluate the needle type, needle count, diameter and intended application before determining the soldering position and suitable welding fixture.

A limited adjustment to an existing configuration may not require completely new tooling. However, if a specific configuration requires a dedicated welding fixture, an additional development fee may apply.

Developing a New Needle Configuration

More complex custom needle projects may involve completely new arrangements, including:

  • High-low needle configurations such as the BEE Needle
  • Forked magnum configurations
  • Flat configurations with alternating needle lengths
  • Three 3RL groups arranged side by side
  • Offset double-row arrangements
  • Combinations of different needle-tip lengths
  • Other specialized needle group structures

These projects involve more than changing one parameter. The needle arrangement, length differences, soldering position and fixation method must all be designed and tested.

Development of a new soldered needle configuration may include:

  • Evaluating the artist’s original concept
  • Selecting the needle diameter and taper
  • Designing the needle arrangement
  • Determining soldering distance and tightness
  • Developing a dedicated welding fixture
  • Trial welding and sample production
  • Needle-group stability testing
  • Design adjustments based on test results
  • Mass-production consistency validation

MOQ and Tooling Cost for Custom Needle Configurations

When a custom needle configuration requires a dedicated welding fixture or tooling, the typical MOQ starts from 250 boxes per configuration.

A separate welding-fixture or tooling fee may also apply. The cost depends on:

  • Complexity of the needle arrangement
  • Number and position of the needles
  • Number of welding and positioning steps
  • Need for dedicated fixtures
  • Number of sample and revision rounds
  • Difficulty of maintaining consistency during mass production

Creating a new needle concept may appear simple. The engineering challenge is converting that concept into a repeatable product that can be manufactured consistently.

The engineer must design not only the needle configuration but also the positioning and welding fixtures required for stable production. For this reason, development costs cannot be calculated only according to the number of needles.

Our BEE Needle development case shows how an original performance requirement was transformed into a hybrid tattoo needle configuration.

3. Custom Cartridge Housing and Components

Custom plastic components can give a tattoo cartridge a more distinctive and recognizable product identity.

A cartridge contains several separate plastic and silicone components. Because each part has different materials, molds, production methods and inventory conditions, each component may have a different MOQ.

Customizable components may include:

  • Center housing
  • Front tip
  • Plunger
  • Cap
  • Silicone spring component
  • Housing color
  • Product window
  • Logo position
  • Grip area
  • Surface texture
  • Overall external appearance

Custom Center Housing

In a split-structure tattoo cartridge, the front tip and center housing are separate components.

If only the center housing is customized while the standard front tip remains unchanged, the MOQ can start from approximately 500 boxes.

Possible modifications include:

  • Housing color
  • Window appearance
  • Logo or molded marking
  • Surface texture
  • Decorative details
  • Partial external shape adjustments

This approach can create visible product differentiation without requiring a completely new cartridge system.

You can review our existing tattoo cartridge customization options to understand how standard platforms can be adapted.

Custom Front Tip

If the front tip must be customized, the typical MOQ is approximately 2,500 boxes.

The front tip must match different needle configurations and sizes, such as:

  • Round Liner
  • Round Shader
  • Magnum
  • Curved Magnum
  • Flat
  • Other specialized configurations

Different needle types, counts and structures may require different tip molds. Each additional tip specification may require another mold change and production setup.

Therefore, one of the most important principles behind plastic-component MOQ is:

The more frequently injection molds must be changed, the higher the MOQ will usually be.

If a customer selects only a limited number of tip specifications, fewer mold changes may be required. In some cases, this allows us to evaluate a lower MOQ.

Custom Plunger

When the plunger is customized together with the center housing, its MOQ can be combined with the housing MOQ. It does not require a separate MOQ calculation.

If the plunger is customized as a standalone component, the MOQ is 2,500 boxes.

Because the plunger affects drive transmission, cartridge movement and machine compatibility, changes to its length, shape, connection point or structure may require assembly and functional testing.

Cartridge Cap

Our current standard cartridge caps are regularly stocked components. Therefore, there is no additional MOQ when an existing cap is used.

If the cap requires a new color, shape, dimension or structure outside the stocked options, the project must be evaluated separately. A new MOQ and tooling cost may apply.

Custom Silicone Spring Component

The MOQ for a custom silicone spring component is 50,000 pieces.

Custom silicone production may require separate raw-material preparation, color matching, hardness selection, machine setup and molding.

The MOQ is calculated by individual component quantity rather than finished cartridge boxes because the silicone part is produced as a separate molded component.

Custom requirements may include:

  • Color
  • Hardness
  • Shape
  • Dimensions
  • Elastic return performance
  • Compatibility with the cartridge structure

If the project uses one of our existing stocked silicone components, the 50,000-piece custom MOQ does not apply.

Why Do Different Components Have Different MOQs?

MOQ is determined by more than the physical size of a component.

The main considerations include:

  • Whether the component is regularly stocked
  • Whether separate raw materials must be prepared
  • Whether the production line requires a color or material change
  • Whether an injection mold must be changed
  • Whether the component can be produced together with other customized parts
  • Whether unused custom materials can be used for future orders

A regularly stocked component normally does not create an additional MOQ. A component requiring dedicated material, color, tooling or an independent production run must meet the corresponding minimum production quantity.

4. Internal Cartridge Structure Modifications

Internal structure modification is different from needle configuration development and external housing customization.

It may involve:

  • Internal needle-guidance components
  • Membrane or backflow-prevention system
  • Needle bar and drive structure
  • Ink storage or ink-flow channel
  • Needle-group positioning
  • Stabilizing support structure
  • Cartridge assembly method
  • Operating resistance
  • Tattoo machine compatibility

These changes may directly affect needle stability, ink flow, backflow prevention, operating resistance, safety and mass-production consistency. Engineering evaluation and testing are therefore required.

If the modification involves only one shared component, the MOQ may start from approximately 500 boxes.

If the project involves a custom front tip, multiple internal components or several needle configurations, the MOQ is normally 2,500 boxes or more.

Before mass production, an internal structure modification may require:

  • 3D modeling
  • Prototype production
  • Assembly testing
  • Functional testing
  • Tattoo machine compatibility testing
  • Design revisions
  • Pilot production validation

The final MOQ and development cost are evaluated according to the actual scope of the modification.

5. Independent Injection Mold Development

When a customer requires an original cartridge appearance, proprietary housing or completely new cartridge structure, independent injection mold development may be necessary.

Injection mold costs generally range from approximately USD 1,000 to USD 50,000, depending on the project scope.

An injection mold used to manufacture plastic cartridge components is not the same as a welding fixture used to produce a custom needle configuration.

Limited Mold Modification

A small modification, such as changing only the cartridge window, may cost approximately USD 1,000.

This type of project retains most of the existing product structure and changes only one visible component, so the tooling investment is relatively limited.

Complete Product Development

If the project requires a completely new housing, front-tip system or internal structure, the development cost will be significantly higher.

A complete project may include:

  • Product concept evaluation
  • 3D modeling
  • Engineering and structural design
  • Prototype production
  • Mold design
  • Injection mold manufacturing
  • Assembly testing
  • Functional testing
  • Tattoo machine compatibility testing
  • Pilot production
  • Mass-production validation
  • Multiple design revisions

Depending on the product structure, number of plastic components and number of molds required, the tooling investment may reach tens of thousands of US dollars.

For this reason, an accurate quotation cannot normally be provided from only one reference image or a brief description. Our engineering team must first understand the complete design requirements, determine which components must be modified and evaluate whether the design can be produced consistently.

What Factors Determine the Final MOQ?

The MOQ for a custom tattoo cartridge needle project is not set arbitrarily. It reflects production efficiency and the resources required to prepare and control each manufacturing batch.

The main factors include:

  • Whether the project involves packaging, needles, plastic components or internal structures
  • Number of needle configurations and sizes
  • Whether regularly stocked needle materials can be used
  • Complexity of the soldered needle configuration
  • Need for dedicated welding fixtures
  • Availability of standard plastic components
  • Frequency of injection mold changes
  • Plastic or silicone color and material changes
  • Raw-material preparation requirements
  • Equipment setup time
  • Assembly complexity
  • Prototype and testing requirements
  • Packaging material quantity
  • Expected annual purchasing volume

In simple terms:

  • Standard custom packaging: no additional product MOQ, but packaging material costs apply
  • Standard needle diameter or taper adjustment: normally no additional MOQ
  • Special needle material or parameter: usually 50 boxes per configuration
  • Custom soldered needle structure: usually 250 boxes per configuration, with a possible fixture fee
  • Existing stocked cap: no additional MOQ
  • Custom center housing: from approximately 500 boxes
  • Plunger customized with the housing: combined with the housing MOQ
  • Standalone custom plunger: 2,500 boxes
  • Custom front tip: usually 2,500 boxes
  • Custom silicone spring component: 50,000 pieces
  • Internal cartridge modification: evaluated according to the components and configurations involved
  • Independent injection mold development: tooling cost and MOQ evaluated according to the design

How Can You Reduce the Initial Customization Cost?

A new tattoo cartridge needle brand does not always need to begin with a completely new product platform.

A more practical development path is:

Stage 1: Start With Custom Packaging

Use an existing and validated cartridge product with your own branded packaging to test the market.

Stage 2: Customize Needle Parameters

Based on feedback from tattoo artists, adjust the needle diameter, taper, soldering distance, tightness or other needle parameters to create a performance difference.

Stage 3: Customize the Housing

Once demand becomes more stable, customize the housing color, center shell or visible details to strengthen brand recognition.

Stage 4: Develop a Specialized Needle or Internal Structure

After identifying a clear market requirement, develop a specialized soldered needle configuration or modify part of the internal cartridge structure.

Stage 5: Build an Independent Product Platform

When market demand, purchasing volume and development budget have been validated, proceed with a complete proprietary product and independent injection molds.

This staged approach controls initial investment while allowing the brand to develop its own product identity and technical advantages over time.

Brands can also review our OEM and customization policy before deciding which development route is suitable.

What Information Is Required for an Accurate Quotation?

To help our team evaluate your project accurately, please provide as much of the following information as possible:

  • Whether you want to customize packaging, needles, plastic components or internal structure
  • Target product type
  • Required needle configurations and sizes
  • Needle diameter and taper
  • Soldering distance or needle-group tightness
  • Arrangement of any custom needle configuration
  • Plastic or silicone components to be changed
  • Housing color and appearance requirements
  • Estimated initial order quantity
  • Expected annual purchasing volume
  • Reference images, drawings, physical samples or 3D files
  • Target market
  • Expected launch date
  • Available development budget

If you have only an initial idea, you can begin by explaining the problem you want to solve or the working result you want to achieve.

Our engineering team can then determine whether the project requires only a standard parameter adjustment, a dedicated welding fixture, modification of an existing component or development of a completely new injection mold.

Frequently Asked Questions
